Our Take
What makes Westwater Campground (Ranger Station) special
Westwater Campground at the Ranger Station is a launching point into some of eastern Utah's wildest and most remote canyon country. Situated near the small community of Westwater with 11 sites, this campground serves as the gateway to the Westwater Canyon section of the Colorado River, a stretch famous for its thrilling rapids, towering dark Precambrian rock walls, and a sense of isolation that feels increasingly rare in the modern West. The canyon itself is a geological marvel. Ancient Vishnu-age metamorphic rock, some of the oldest exposed stone in Utah, rises sharply from the river, creating a dramatic corridor that river runners and kayakers prize for both its scenery and its challenging whitewater. Permits are required for river trips through Westwater Canyon, and the experience ranks among the finest single-day rafting adventures in the region. Beyond the river, the surrounding desert offers solitary hiking across mesas and through side canyons where petroglyphs hint at centuries of human presence. The campground's 11 sites serve a mix of river runners staging for morning launches and travelers seeking a quiet overnight stop along the I-70 corridor. The best river conditions typically run from spring through early fall, with May and June offering strong flows. Summer evenings are warm and expansive, perfect for watching stars emerge over the desert. Bring all supplies you need, as services are limited in this remote corner of Utah.
