Our Take
What makes Winnie Campground - USFS special
Deep in the Chippewa National Forest, Winnie Campground sits on the wild western shore of Lake Winnibigoshish, one of Minnesota's most legendary fishing lakes. This is big water country: "Big Winnie," as locals call it, sprawls across more than 58,000 acres and has earned a reputation as one of the premier destinations in the Upper Midwest for trophy muskie and walleye. If you have ever dreamed of landing a true giant, this is the place to pitch your tent. The campground occupies a beautifully remote stretch of shoreline where towering red pines meet the lake's edge. The atmosphere here leans wild and unhurried, with loons calling across the water at dusk and bald eagles circling overhead. Beyond fishing, the surrounding forest offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and berry picking in late summer. Winnie Campground provides a modest number of well-maintained sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. Some sites offer direct lake access, which is a real bonus for anglers launching canoes or small boats at dawn. The campground operates seasonally, typically from mid-May through September. Summer weekends draw steady crowds, so reserving ahead is strongly recommended. The best fishing tends to peak in June and again in early fall when the lake cools. For those seeking a genuine northwoods experience with world-class angling just steps from camp, Winnie is hard to beat.
