Our Take

What makes Ahart Campground special

Ahart Campground rewards those willing to make the 40-mile drive from Foresthill into the rugged backcountry of Tahoe National Forest. Twelve sites line the banks of the North Fork American River near French Meadows Reservoir, placing you in a landscape of towering conifers, granite boulders, and mountain water so clear you can count the river rocks from the bank. Fishing is excellent — both the river and the reservoir offer trout action, and a boat on French Meadows opens up even more possibilities for bass and kokanee salmon. The elevation keeps summer temperatures comfortable when the Sacramento Valley swelters below, making this a premier warm-weather escape for Northern Californians. The access road is narrow and winding, so larger rigs should plan carefully and arrive in daylight. Fall brings golden aspens and fewer visitors for a quieter experience. Stock up on supplies in Foresthill before the drive in, as there is nothing available once you pass town. Ahart is made for anglers, boaters, and mountain lovers who consider the journey part of the adventure.
