Our Take
What makes Garden Point Boat-in Campground special
Garden Point is the kind of campground that makes you feel like you have earned something. Accessible only by boat from the Dark Day launch ramp, these 16 lakeside sites on Bullards Bar Reservoir deliver a backcountry experience without requiring a multi-day backpacking trip. You load your gear into your boat, motor or paddle across the reservoir, and set up camp on a quiet shoreline where the only sounds are lapping water and the occasional osprey call overhead. The fishing is excellent right from your campsite, and the swimming is as good as it gets in the Sierra foothills. Mid-June through September offers the best conditions, with warm water temperatures and long daylight hours. Plan carefully — you need to bring everything including water, and there are no services once you leave the launch. A calm morning crossing is easiest for canoes and kayaks. Garden Point is made for adventurous families, fishing groups, and paddlers who want remote lakeside camping without a wilderness permit.
