Our Take
What makes Au Train Lake Campground special
Au Train Lake Campground occupies a lovely spot at the southern end of Au Train Lake in Michigan's Hiawatha National Forest, just a short drive from the lakeside town of Munising. This is the Upper Peninsula at its finest: quiet water, dense forest, and a pace of life that slows down the moment you pull into camp. Au Train Lake is a warm, shallow lake known for its excellent panfish and bass fishing, and it has long been a favorite among anglers who appreciate a reliable bite and a peaceful setting. The lake is also well suited for canoeing, kayaking, and swimming, with a sandy beach area near the campground that families particularly enjoy. The Au Train River connects the lake to Lake Superior and is a popular paddling route in its own right, winding through marshlands rich with birdlife. The campground features approximately 37 sites spread through a mixed hardwood and conifer forest, offering good shade and privacy between neighbors. Amenities include vault toilets, hand water pumps, picnic tables, fire rings, and a boat launch. Some sites sit close to the lakeshore, providing lovely water views. Reservations are available and recommended for July and August weekends, though midweek visitors will often find availability. The camping season runs from late May through September, with summer offering the warmest water temperatures and longest days. For a relaxed, family-friendly camping experience in the heart of the Upper Peninsula, Au Train Lake is a wonderful choice.
