Our Take
What makes BAY FURNACE CAMPGROUND special
Bay Furnace Campground claims one of the most coveted locations in Michigan's Upper Peninsula: a stretch of sandy shoreline on the southern edge of Lake Superior, just minutes from the town of Munising and the breathtaking Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Named for the historic iron smelting furnace whose stone ruins still stand near the campground entrance, Bay Furnace blends natural grandeur with a tangible sense of history. The setting is spectacular. Lake Superior spreads out before you in shades of blue and green that shift with the weather and the light, while the forested bluffs of Grand Island rise across the bay. Sunsets here are legendary, painting the sky in vivid color as the lake catches every hue. Pictured Rocks, with its towering sandstone cliffs, sea caves, and cascading waterfalls, is easily accessible by car or boat tour from nearby Munising. Chapel Falls, Miners Castle, and Spray Falls are among the many natural landmarks within a short drive. The campground offers approximately 50 sites set among mature hardwoods and conifers in the Hiawatha National Forest. Amenities include vault toilets, water spigots, picnic tables, fire rings, and direct beach access. Some sites offer filtered views of the lake through the trees. Reservations are strongly recommended throughout the summer, as proximity to Pictured Rocks makes this one of the most sought-after campgrounds in the region. The best season is June through September, with July and August bringing the warmest conditions. For campers who want to fall asleep to the sound of Superior's waves and wake up minutes from some of the most dramatic scenery in the Midwest, Bay Furnace is the answer.
