Our Take

What makes Bertha Creek Campground special

Tucked into the rugged beauty of Turnagain Pass along the Seward Highway, Bertha Creek Campground is one of those quiet Alaskan gems that rewards travelers willing to venture off the beaten path. With just four first-come, first-served sites nestled among spruce and cottonwood, this small campground feels refreshingly intimate, a far cry from the crowded RV parks closer to Anchorage. The setting is pure southcentral Alaska: glacier-carved valleys, rushing creeks, and mountain ridgelines that catch the late-evening alpenglow well into summer. The campground sits at roughly mile 65 of the Seward Highway, placing you within easy reach of both Girdwood and the Portage Glacier area. Hikers will find excellent trailheads nearby, including routes into the Chugach National Forest backcountry. Fishing opportunities abound in surrounding streams, and wildlife sightings of moose, eagles, and the occasional black bear are part of the daily rhythm here. Because sites cannot be reserved in advance, your best strategy is to arrive early in the day, especially on summer weekends from mid-June through August when daylight stretches past midnight. Facilities are basic but well-maintained, with vault toilets and fire rings at each site. If you are looking for a peaceful overnight stop on a Kenai Peninsula road trip or a base camp for exploring Turnagain Arm, Bertha Creek delivers an authentic Alaskan camping experience without the crowds.
