Our Take

What makes Boxelder Forks Campground special

Boxelder Forks Campground is a gem of a hideaway tucked into a grove of tall Ponderosa pines along Boxelder Creek, near the tiny community of Nemo in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The fourteen sites are strung along the creek in a narrow, shaded valley that feels worlds apart from the tourist bustle of nearby attractions, yet Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the town of Hill City are all within a manageable drive. That combination of seclusion and proximity makes Boxelder Forks a smart basecamp for exploring the Black Hills on your own terms. The creek winds right through camp, and its gentle murmur is the unofficial soundtrack here. Kids love wading in the shallow pools, and the surrounding forest invites easy exploration on foot or mountain bike. The Centennial Trail, one of the Black Hills' premier long-distance paths, passes nearby, offering everything from mellow strolls to ambitious day hikes through granite spires and meadows. The campground is generally open from late May through mid-September. Each site comes with a picnic table and fire ring, and vault toilets are provided. There are no hookups or potable water, so bring your own supplies. Sites are first-come, first-served, and while weekends in July can fill up early, midweek visits almost always guarantee a spot. Arrive by Thursday afternoon for the best selection during peak season.
