Overview

About Chukar Park Campground

Let the sounds of the babbling North Fork of the Malheur River lull yourself to sleep at one of the riverside campsites of Chukar Park Campground. This primitive facility offers 19 campsites, seven of which are situated along the shady, lush riparian vegetation. Popular as a base camp with birders, hunters and fishers as well as those venturing through along nearby highway 20, Chukar Park has campsites with partial shade and in full sun. Note that the high-standard, graded county road leading to the campground may form washboard ridges between gradings. Know Before You Go Open year-round with camp host present, generally late April through November. All campsites are available on a first come, first served basis; no reservations are available. Potable water is available but no showers are offered. No cell phone is coverage available in the campground but some carrier coverage is available in nearby Juntura. This is a primitive campground; no hookups or RV dump station is present. Mosquitoes can be voracious, particularly in the spring. Puncture vine, also known as goathead, is present in some areas of the campground, so be aware for your pet's sake.

Our Take

What makes Chukar Park Campground special

Named after the nimble game birds that dart across the rimrock above, Chukar Park Campground is a quiet outpost along the North Fork of the Malheur River in Oregon's vast high desert. With 19 campsites spread beneath cottonwoods and willows near the river's edge, this campground strikes a fine balance between having enough neighbors to feel sociable and enough space to feel wild. The Malheur country is big, open, and unapologetically rugged. Sagebrush-covered hills rise on either side of the river valley, and the sky overhead seems to stretch on forever. The North Fork offers good fishing for trout and smallmouth bass, and the surrounding BLM lands are laced with old ranch roads and game trails perfect for exploring on foot. Birders will find the area especially rewarding, with raptors, songbirds, and, of course, chukar partridge all making regular appearances. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for visiting. Summer temperatures in this part of eastern Oregon can climb well past 90 degrees, making the shaded riverside sites a welcome refuge but midday activity a challenge. The campground is managed by the BLM and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with minimal fees. Facilities are basic but functional. Bring your own firewood, plenty of water, and a spirit of self-reliance. Out here, that is all you need.
