Our Take
What makes Collins Cove Horse Campground special
Tucked deep in the rugged hollows of Jefferson National Forest, Collins Cove Horse Campground is a quiet retreat built with equestrians in mind. The eleven primitive sites sit beneath a canopy of hardwoods along a gravel forest road near the small community of Ivanhoe, Virginia, offering the kind of solitude that only backcountry camping can deliver. Horse corrals and hitching posts are available at each site, and miles of forest trails fan out from camp into the surrounding mountains, making this a genuine basecamp for multi-day riding adventures through some of the finest horse country in the southern Appalachians. There are no hookups or running water here, so come prepared with everything you need. A vault toilet serves the campground and each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, but that is the extent of the amenities. The trade-off is peace and quiet on a scale that is hard to find at more developed facilities. Spring and fall are the prime seasons, when moderate temperatures and vibrant foliage make every ride a scenic one. Summer can be warm and humid in these valleys, but mornings stay cool enough to hit the trail early. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and the campground rarely fills up, so spontaneous weekend trips are almost always possible.
