Our Take
What makes Dam West Campground special
Stretched along the southern shore of Carlyle Lake, Dam West Campground puts you on the edge of Illinois' largest man-made lake, a sprawling 26,000-acre reservoir located roughly fifty miles east of St. Louis. The wide-open water and gently rolling prairie landscape create a setting that feels surprisingly expansive for the heartland, drawing boaters, anglers, and weekend wanderers from across the region. Fishing is a year-round pursuit here, with the lake yielding impressive catches of largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. Sailboats dot the horizon on breezy afternoons, and powerboaters have room to roam without feeling crowded.
