Our Take
What makes Datil Well Recreation Area Campground special
Datil Well Recreation Area Campground offers a taste of Old West history along US Highway 60, one mile west of the small town of Datil in central New Mexico. The campground sits along the historic Magdalena Livestock Driveway, once the last regularly used cattle trail in the United States, where ranchers drove herds from the surrounding basin to the railroad in Magdalena. Today, 22 well-spaced sites each come with a shade shelter, picnic table, fire pit, and barbecue grill — a welcome setup in this high-desert landscape where shade is hard to come by. Vault toilets and potable water are provided, along with a small visitor center that tells the story of the area''s ranching heritage. The surrounding plains of the San Agustin Basin stretch to distant mountain ranges, creating big-sky vistas in every direction. The Very Large Array radio telescope complex is a short drive south and makes for a fascinating side trip. Wildlife including pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and raptors are commonly spotted. Nights are exceptionally dark and quiet here, ideal for stargazing. The campground is open year-round, though winter nights at this elevation can be cold.
