Our Take

What makes FLOWING WELL CAMPGROUND special

Flowing Well Campground earns its name from the natural springs that feed the Sturgeon River as it winds through Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Set along the western banks of the river beneath a canopy of large hardwoods and hemlocks, this six-site campground feels like a well-kept secret tucked into the northern woods. Wildflowers line the riverbanks in summer, and the forest floor is lush with ferns and mosses that give the whole place a timeless, almost enchanted quality. Munising, the gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, is nearby, putting some of the most dramatic shoreline scenery in the Great Lakes within easy reach. A day trip to the multicolored sandstone cliffs, sea caves, and waterfalls of Pictured Rocks is practically mandatory. Closer to camp, the Sturgeon River offers quiet paddling and fishing, and the surrounding forest is laced with trails for hiking and wildlife watching. The campground is open from late spring through fall, with July and August being the busiest months. Because there are only six sites and they tend to go first-come, first-served, arriving early in the day gives you the best shot at securing a spot. Amenities are basic, so pack in your water and essentials. For campers who value a riverside setting, big trees, and proximity to one of Michigan's crown-jewel national lakeshores, Flowing Well is a genuine find.
