Our Take
What makes JOE GRAHAM HORSE CAMPGROUND special
Joe Graham Horse Campground is a true basecamp for equestrian adventurers in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Designed from the ground up with riders in mind, the campground features corrals, hitching posts, and generous pull-through sites that accommodate horse trailers of all sizes. From camp, you can saddle up and ride directly onto a network of trails that wind through dense stands of Douglas fir and hemlock, with periodic clearings that reveal stunning views of Mt. Hood's glaciated slopes. But you do not need a horse to love this place. Mountain bikers and hikers share many of the same trails, exploring ridgelines, wildflower meadows, and creek crossings that define the western Cascades landscape. The surrounding forest is rich with wildlife -- black-tailed deer, osprey, and the occasional black bear are regular sightings for those who move quietly. The campground offers a modest number of sites, so reservations are strongly recommended during peak season from late June through September. Early autumn is arguably the finest time to visit, when the crowds thin, the vine maples blaze crimson and gold, and the trails are firm and fast. Bring your own water and firewood, as services are limited. The nearest full-service town is about thirty minutes away, making this a place where you genuinely unplug and let the forest set the pace.
