Our Take

What makes LITTCARR CAMPGROUND special

Littcarr Campground is a small, secluded gem on the shores of Carr Creek Lake in the rugged hills of southeastern Kentucky's Cumberland Plateau. The landscape here is unmistakably Appalachian, with steep, forested ridges rising above the lake and narrow hollows threading back into the hills. The tiny community of Sassafras is nearby, but the real neighbors are the songbirds, wild turkeys, and white-tailed deer that call these woods home. The campground is modest in size, with around 30 sites offering electric and water hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings. The intimate scale means it rarely feels crowded, even during peak weekends. A boat ramp provides access to Carr Creek Lake, a 710-acre reservoir that offers solid fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. The lake is also pleasant for kayaking and canoeing, with quiet coves that reward slow exploration. Nearby Carr Creek State Park adds hiking trails and a swimming beach to the mix. Late spring through early fall is the best window for camping here, with lush green canopy overhead and warm water for swimming. Fall foliage season is particularly stunning on the Cumberland Plateau. Because of its smaller footprint and off-the-highway location, Littcarr tends to attract campers who value peace and simplicity over amenity-packed resorts. It is an honest, unpretentious campground in a beautiful and often overlooked corner of Kentucky.
