Our Take
What makes MILLERS FERRY CAMPGROUND special
Millers Ferry Campground occupies a quiet stretch of shoreline along Dannelly Reservoir, where the Alabama River widens into a broad, slow-moving expanse in the heart of the state's Black Prairie Belt. The landscape here is distinctly Southern, with towering loblolly pines, Spanish moss, and bottomland hardwoods framing the water's edge. Camden, the nearest town, is small and unhurried, which suits the pace of this campground perfectly. The campground offers around 90 sites, a generous mix of waterfront and wooded spots with electric and water hookups. Paved roads wind through the property, and several pull-through sites make life easier for larger RVs. A well-maintained boat ramp provides direct access to the reservoir, where anglers target largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish year-round. The surrounding backwaters and coves are excellent for kayaking, and birders will find plenty to admire in the cypress-lined sloughs. Mild winters make this a viable year-round destination, though spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures and the best fishing. Summer can be hot and humid, but the water is always close. Weekend reservations are wise during peak months, but midweek visitors will often find open sites. Millers Ferry is a laid-back retreat for anyone who loves deep Southern waterways and the kind of quiet that only comes from being a little off the beaten path.
