Our Take
What makes Monument Lake Campground special
Monument Lake Campground is a gateway to the vast wetlands and subtropical wilderness of Big Cypress National Preserve in southern Florida. The 38 sites accommodate both tents and RVs in a flat, open setting surrounded by the preserve''s characteristic mix of cypress domes, sawgrass prairie, and hardwood hammocks. The campground is centrally located within the preserve, providing access to hiking trails, off-road vehicle routes, and miles of backcountry to explore on foot or by canoe. Fishing in the surrounding waterways targets largemouth bass, bluegill, and various catfish species. The preserve borders Everglades National Park, and the two together form one of the largest wilderness areas in the eastern United States. Wildlife viewing is exceptional: alligators, wading birds, river otters, and the endangered Florida panther all inhabit the surrounding landscape. Winter is the prime visiting season when temperatures are mild, humidity drops, and mosquito pressure decreases significantly. Summer brings intense heat, daily thunderstorms, and bugs that can be formidable. The campground offers picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, and a dump station but no hookups. Night skies here are remarkably dark for a location this close to the Miami metro area.
