Our Take

What makes Paiute Campground special

Paiute Campground sits at a lofty 8,800 feet in the Fishlake National Forest, where the air is thin, the pines are tall, and the pace of life slows to something deeply restorative. Located 29 miles north of Loa along Highway 25, this campground neighbors Johnson Reservoir, a scenic mountain lake that draws anglers chasing trout through the cool summer months. With 48 sites, including a generous number of pull-through spots, Paiute is particularly welcoming to RV travelers and those towing trailers on longer road trips through central Utah. The surrounding landscape is classic high-mountain plateau country. Aspens and conifers blanket the hillsides, and in autumn the entire area erupts into brilliant shades of gold and orange that rival any fall color display in the Rockies. Summers are mild and pleasant at this elevation, offering a refreshing escape from the desert heat that dominates much of the state below. The reservoir provides opportunities for fishing from shore or small watercraft, and the surrounding forest is laced with trails for hiking and horseback riding. Wildlife is abundant here -- keep an eye out for mule deer, elk, and the occasional osprey hunting over the water. Paiute Campground is one of those hidden gems that rewards the drive to get there with genuine mountain tranquility and wide-open skies.
