Our Take
What makes Pat Mayse East special
Pat Mayse East campground hugs the wooded shoreline of Pat Mayse Lake in the Red River Basin of northeast Texas, offering a quieter alternative to the state's more heavily trafficked reservoirs. The 5,993-acre lake is known for excellent crappie and bass fishing, particularly in spring when the bite is most reliable. Swimming areas give families a place to cool off during the long Texas summers, while the boat ramp provides easy lake access for skiing and pleasure cruising. Shaded picnic areas beneath towering hardwoods make midday comfortable even in July. The campground works well from March through November, though spring and fall deliver the mildest temperatures and best fishing conditions. Arrive early on holiday weekends — sites fill fast with anglers from the Dallas-Fort Worth area making the two-hour drive east. Pat Mayse East is a strong pick for fishing families, weekend boaters, and campers who prefer a relaxed Lamar County setting over crowded resort lakes.
