Our Take
What makes PAYNE CAMPGROUND-ALLATOONA LAKE special
Payne Campground sits on the shaded banks of Allatoona Lake, right in the rolling Piedmont hills of northwest Georgia near Acworth. With metro Atlanta just 30 miles to the southeast, this Army Corps of Engineers campground is a natural weekend escape for city dwellers who want to trade traffic for birdsong and spend a few days on the water without a long drive. The campground has approximately 60 sites, many with direct or filtered lake views, electric and water hookups, paved pads, and fire rings. The campground loops are well-maintained and shaded by a mix of hardwoods and pines, and the restrooms with hot showers are a welcome comfort. A boat ramp provides quick access to Allatoona's extensive shoreline, where bass fishing, waterskiing, and pontoon cruising are the main attractions. A swimming beach offers a calmer option for families with young children. Summer is the high season, and Payne fills quickly on weekends, so early reservations are essential from May through September. Spring dogwood blooms and fall foliage make the shoulder seasons especially rewarding, with lighter crowds and comfortable temperatures. The nearby town of Acworth has restaurants, shops, and the charming Acworth Beach on the lake's north shore. Payne Campground strikes a fine balance between convenience and natural beauty, making it one of the most accessible lakeside camping options in the greater Atlanta region.
