Our Take
What makes POSEY LAKE CAMPGROUND special
Perched at 8,800 feet on the Colorado Plateau in southern Utah, Posey Lake Campground occupies one of those rare sweet spots where high desert meets mountain forest. The 21 sites are arranged around the shores of Posey Lake, a small but scenic body of water surrounded by ponderosa pine, spruce, and aspen that light up in brilliant gold come autumn. This is Dixie National Forest country -- vast, uncrowded, and strikingly beautiful in a way that feels distinctly different from Utah's famous red-rock parks to the south. Fishing for stocked rainbow trout is a popular draw, and the lake is small enough that a float tube or canoe is all you need to reach the best spots. The surrounding Aquarius Plateau offers some of the finest backcountry exploring in the state, with trails leading to alpine meadows, hidden lakes, and sweeping panoramas that stretch from the Henry Mountains to the Grand Staircase. Nights are cool and remarkably dark, making Posey Lake a favorite among stargazers who know that southern Utah skies are in a class of their own. The campground is well-maintained with a relaxed pace that suits families and solo adventurers alike. Come for the trout, stay for the silence, and leave already planning your return.
