Our Take

What makes Rock Crossing Campground (AZ) special

Perched at 7,316 feet in the Coconino National Forest, Rock Crossing Campground is a cool-weather sanctuary that feels worlds away from the desert heat of lower Arizona. Tall ponderosa pines and Gambel oaks shade the 35 campsites, creating a forest atmosphere that surprises visitors who associate the state only with saguaros and sunbaked mesas. The Happy Jack area surrounding the campground is a haven for wildlife watchers, hikers, and anglers. Nearby lakes and streams offer solid fishing for trout, while the network of forest roads and trails invites exploration on foot, horseback, or mountain bike. Elk, mule deer, and wild turkey are regular visitors to the area, and patient campers may spot them browsing through the trees in the quiet hours of early morning. Summer is when Rock Crossing truly shines. While Phoenix and Tucson bake under triple-digit temperatures, this forested plateau enjoys mild days and refreshingly cool nights that make a campfire feel like a necessity rather than a luxury. The campground is well-maintained with a mix of sites suitable for tents and RVs, and the relaxed pace of life up here makes it easy to lose track of the days. If you are looking for an Arizona camping experience that trades cactus for pine trees and heat for mountain breezes, Rock Crossing is a perfect fit.
