Natural Features Many sites at this campground look out to Metolius River, a tributary of the Deschutes River. The headwaters of the river are at Metolius Springs at the base of Black Butte, a 3,076-foot cinder cone. The clear, cold river flows north from the springs through diverse coniferous forest and a landscape of volcanic activity. The area provides habitat for mammals such as mule deer, coyote and cougar. Migratory birds and native fish also call the area home. Nearby Attractions The Metolius-Windigo Trail, open to hikers, bikers and horses, is more than 100 miles in length, and begins near the Metolius River headwaters west of the town of Sisters, Oregon. The trail was created in the 1980s primarily to serve long-distance horse riders seeking an alternative to the Pacific Crest Trail. Lava Lands Visitor Center in Bend, Oregon, offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the diverse landscape and history of the area through interpretive programs and exhibits. Our Take

What makes SMILING RIVER CAMPGROUND special

Smiling River Campground lives up to its cheerful name. Set along the banks of the Metolius River basin in the Deschutes National Forest near Sisters, Oregon, this campground combines easy access with some of the most stunning scenery in the central Cascades. Ponderosa pines rise tall and fragrant around each site, their cinnamon bark catching the afternoon light, while the river murmurs steadily nearby. The area around Sisters is a recreational goldmine. Hiking and mountain biking trails fan out in every direction, from gentle riverside walks to challenging climbs toward the Three Sisters Wilderness. Fly fishing on the Metolius and Deschutes rivers draws anglers from around the Northwest, and the charming western-themed town of Sisters is just a short drive away for supplies, dining, and its famous quilt show each July. Smiling River offers around 35 sites with vault toilets and potable water. Sites are well shaded and nicely spaced beneath the ponderosa canopy. Reservations are available and highly recommended from mid-June through Labor Day, as the campground's convenient location and beautiful setting make it a perennial favorite. The season typically runs from May through October. Summer days are warm and dry, and nights cool off quickly at this elevation, so keep a fleece handy for evenings around the fire.
