Our Take

What makes SOUTH SANDUSKY CAMPGROUND special

South Sandusky Campground sits on the southern shore of Rend Lake, a massive recreation complex in the heart of southern Illinois that combines over 20,000 acres of water with nearly 20,000 acres of surrounding public land. The 128-site campground is one of the largest on the lake, offering a range of site types from wooded tent pads to full-hookup RV spots. Fishing is the top draw: the lake produces excellent crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and hybrid striped bass, and several fishing tournaments are held here throughout the year. The campground has a boat ramp for direct lake access and is close to swimming beaches and picnic areas. The surrounding forests and grasslands support a diverse wildlife population including whitetail deer, wild turkey, foxes, raccoons, and abundant waterfowl during migration. Rend Lake''s trail system connects campgrounds and recreation areas, and the nearby Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area adds golf, a resort lodge, and additional trails to the mix. Fall hunting season brings deer and waterfowl hunters to the surrounding public land. The campground is managed by the Corps of Engineers with modern facilities. Southern Illinois surprises visitors with its hilly, wooded terrain.
