About TAHKENITCH CAMPGROUND
Overview Tahkenitch Campground is a beautiful camping destination located in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, 8 miles north of Reedsport. The campground offers some very secluded sites surrounded by local coastal shrubbery, with some other sites that are more open. Three hiking trails can be accessed next to the campground, leading to Threemile Lake and the Tahkenitch Dunes. Across the road is Tahkenitch Lake. The name Tahkenitch means "lake of many fingers." Fishing here can be relaxing and rewarding. Recreation The adjacent day use area serves as the trailhead for Tahkenitch Dunes Trail, Threemile Lake Trail, and Threemile Lake South Trail. All three trails are good for sand play and scenery. Tahkenitch Dunes Trail goes through a mile of conifer forest, opening onto the dunes with views of the ocean. The trail then enters a smaller stand of shore pine and completes its journey at the Pacific Coast. Boating and fishing are popular at nearby Tahkenitch Lake. Our Take
What makes TAHKENITCH CAMPGROUND special
Tahkenitch Campground is a hidden gem nestled in the coastal forest of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, about eight miles north of Reedsport. The sites are beautifully secluded, set among shore pines, rhododendrons, and salal that create natural privacy screens between neighbors. It feels remarkably wild for a developed campground, and the hushed atmosphere beneath the canopy is a welcome contrast to busier coastal parks. The campground serves as a gateway to some of the Oregon Dunes' most impressive landscapes. A short trail leads to Tahkenitch Creek and the open dune sheets beyond, where towering sand formations stretch toward the ocean. Tahkenitch Lake, just to the east, is excellent for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing for perch and trout. The Tahkenitch Dunes Trail and the longer Threemile Lake Trail both depart from near the campground, offering everything from quick afternoon strolls to full-day adventures through forest and sand. The campground is open year-round, though summer months bring the warmest and driest weather. Fall can be equally magical, with fewer crowds and moody coastal fog rolling through the trees. Sites are generally first-come, first-served, so early arrival on holiday weekends is essential. Reedsport and Florence provide nearby groceries, dining, and fuel. For campers seeking a quiet coastal forest retreat with dune exploration at the doorstep, Tahkenitch delivers beautifully.
