Our Take
What makes TERRACES CAMPGROUND - PICNIC AREA special
Nestled deep within scenic Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains, Terraces Campground and Picnic Area feels like a well-kept secret hiding in the Nevada high desert. Located roughly 35 miles southeast of Elko, the campground sits at the base of some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the Great Basin, where glacially carved cirques, cascading waterfalls, and wildflower meadows rival anything found in the more famous ranges to the west. The Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway delivers you right to the doorstep, winding through a narrow valley flanked by steep, reddish cliffs and dense groves of aspen and mountain mahogany. The picnic area makes an excellent day-use stop, but camping overnight is the real reward. Morning light on the canyon walls is extraordinary, and the nighttime sky, far from any significant light pollution, blazes with stars. Hiking trails fan out from the canyon, including the popular Ruby Crest Trail, which traverses the spine of the range through alpine lakes and high passes. Fishing, wildlife watching, and photography round out the activities. The campground operates seasonally, generally from June through September, depending on snowpack. Sites are limited and tend to fill on summer weekends, so midweek visits are recommended. The town of Elko offers full services and makes a convenient resupply point. For anyone who thinks Nevada is nothing but sagebrush flats, a visit here will be a revelation.
