Our Take
What makes West Fork Campground (Clayton, GA) special
Perched in the mountains of northeast Georgia's Chattahoochee National Forest, West Fork Campground offers a bird's eye perspective on the legendary Chattooga Wild and Scenic River as it carves through one of the most celebrated whitewater corridors in the eastern United States. The river, made famous by the film Deliverance, is a stunner from above, its emerald pools and boulder-strewn rapids visible through gaps in the hardwood canopy. Six sites are tucked into a forested hillside near Clayton, each offering shade and a sense of privacy. Facilities are modest, with vault toilets and no hookups, keeping the experience rooted in the simplicity of national forest camping. The Chattooga River Trail and several connector paths are accessible nearby, leading down to the river for fishing, wading, or simply sitting on a rock and listening to the water work its way south toward Lake Tugaloo. Spring and fall are the prime seasons here. April and May bring wildflowers, rushing water from spring rains, and mild temperatures perfect for hiking. October transforms the surrounding mountains into a patchwork of red, orange, and gold. Summer is warm but manageable at elevation, and swimming holes along the Chattooga provide welcome relief. The campground is first-come, first-served, and with only six sites, it rewards early arrivals and flexible schedules. For river lovers and mountain wanderers, West Fork is a gem worth seeking out.
