Our Take

What makes AGNEW MEADOWS GROUP CAMP special

Set in the stunning Reds Meadow Valley on the western slopes of the eastern Sierra Nevada, Agnew Meadows Group Camp is a spectacular basecamp for exploring some of California's most iconic alpine terrain. Located just west of Mammoth Lakes, the campground sits at an elevation where towering lodgepole pines frame views of jagged granite peaks and wildflower-dotted meadows. With three group sites available, this camp is designed for parties who want to experience the high Sierra together. The nearby Agnew Meadows Trailhead provides direct access to the Pacific Crest Trail, the John Muir Trail, and routes into the Ansel Adams Wilderness, making it a prime launching point for day hikes or extended backcountry adventures. The San Joaquin River runs through the valley, and anglers will find excellent trout fishing within walking distance. Devils Postpile National Monument and Rainbow Falls are both accessible via the Reds Meadow shuttle, which runs regularly during summer. The campground is typically open from mid-June through mid-September, depending on snowpack. Because access requires the mandatory shuttle from Mammoth Mountain during peak hours, plan ahead and arrive early. Reservations fill quickly for summer weekends, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended. This is high-country camping at its finest, wild, beautiful, and unforgettable.
