Daytime temperatures in the summer are usually in the low 80s and evenings are cool. Vegetation ranges from chaparral and oak at lower elevations to pine forests at higher altitudes. Elevations range from 1,200 to 10,000 feet. The endangered California condor inhabits the forest. The Least Bells vireo and the Southwestern Willow flycatcher are two migratory birds that visitors enjoy spotting in the area. Other local inhabitants include the Arroyo toad, mountain yellow-legged frog, the mountain lion and the two-striped garter snake. Nearby Attractions The Angeles Crest Highway, part of California State Route 2, is a scenic byway that meanders through oak thickets, chaparral, high desert landscapes and pine tree forests. The ski resort town of Wrightwood is very close by. Restaurants and a disc golf course can be found at the North Resort. Take a hike on the Blue Ridge Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail. The Pacific Crest Trail is an impressive path that starts in Mexico and zigzags its way through Angeles and continues north across California, Oregon and Washington.

Our Take

What makes Appletree Campground special

Nestled in a scenic canyon just off the Big Pines Highway near Wrightwood, California, Appletree Campground is a forested retreat in the heart of the Angeles National Forest. Eight well-spaced sites sit beneath a canopy of Jeffrey pines and white firs, offering shade and privacy in a mountain setting that feels far removed from the sprawl of the Los Angeles basin, despite being only about 90 minutes from the city. The surrounding area is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. The Pacific Crest Trail passes nearby, and the ski slopes of Mountain High are just a short drive away for winter visitors. In warmer months, the trails around Big Pines and Blue Ridge offer excellent hiking with sweeping views of the high desert to the north and the San Gabriel Valley to the south. Wrightwood itself is a charming mountain community with local restaurants and shops for resupplying. Appletree is best enjoyed from late spring through fall, roughly May through October, though exact dates depend on snowpack. At around 6,000 feet in elevation, nights can be chilly even in summer so pack warm layers. The eight sites go quickly on weekends, so reserve ahead or plan a midweek visit for a better chance at availability. A wonderful option for Southern Californians seeking mountain air without a marathon drive.
