About BASIN CAMPGROUND

Overview Basin Campground is located in a rustic, remote part of White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire, about 15 miles north of Fryeburg, Maine. It is a small facility with access to hiking and mountain biking trails and proximity to a small pond for fishing and canoeing. The White Mountains boast pristine forests, clear mountain streams and rivers and the tallest peaks in the Northeast. The forest encompasses nearly 800,000 acres in New Hampshire and western Maine, and is one of the most popular in the country. Recreation Hikers will enjoy exploring the 4.5-mile Basin Trail, which leaves from campground, and numerous other hiking and mountain biking trails within a short drive. Trout fishing is available in Basin Pond. The pond's calm waters are also ideal for canoeing. Our Take

What makes BASIN CAMPGROUND special

Basin Campground occupies a remote and tranquil corner of the White Mountain National Forest, roughly fifteen miles north of Fryeburg, New Hampshire, along the Wild River corridor. With just 21 sites, this small campground rewards those willing to venture off the beaten path with an uncommon sense of stillness and immersion in the northern forest. Towering white pines and birches shade the sites, and the sound of moving water is never far away. The Wild River Wilderness area is accessible from nearby trailheads, offering backcountry hiking through some of the least-visited terrain in the White Mountains. The Basin Trail itself leads into the heart of this wilderness, where solitude and old-growth forest await. For a less demanding outing, the gentle river provides wading, fishing, and quiet contemplation along its rocky banks. Evans Notch, a scenic and less-trafficked alternative to the more famous notches of the region, is close by and well worth exploring by car or bicycle. Basin Campground is open from mid-May through mid-October, with the summer months drawing the most visitors. Even during peak season, the campground rarely feels crowded thanks to its off-the-beaten-path location. Reservations are still a wise precaution for weekends. Facilities are basic — vault toilets and no hookups — so pack in what you need and settle into the quiet.
