Our Take
What makes SUGARLOAF 2 CAMPGROUND special
Tucked away in the rugged northwoods near the western base of Mount Washington, Sugarloaf 2 Campground offers a truly remote New Hampshire camping experience. This 33-site campground sits in a landscape defined by dense spruce-fir forests, rushing mountain streams, and the kind of quiet solitude that draws campers back year after year. The surrounding terrain provides access to some of the most dramatic hiking in the Northeast, with trails leading toward the Presidential Range and the famously unpredictable summit of Mount Washington itself. Sites here are well-spaced and shaded, giving each party a genuine sense of privacy in the woods. Facilities are basic, which is part of the appeal — this is a place for those who want to disconnect and settle into the rhythm of the forest. The nearby Zealand Falls Trail and Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail are popular day hikes, and the Cog Railway is a short drive away for those looking for a less strenuous route to the top. Summer and early fall are the prime seasons, with July and August filling up fastest. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. Come prepared for cool mountain evenings, even in midsummer, and bring layers — the weather near Washington has a mind of its own.
