Our Take

What makes SUGARLOAF 1 CAMPGROUND special

Sugarloaf 1 Campground is a quiet, remote getaway near the western base of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, offering the kind of deep-woods solitude that feels increasingly rare in the popular White Mountains. With 29 sites arranged beneath a dense canopy of spruce, fir, and birch, the campground provides a serene base for exploring one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in the eastern United States. The air carries the cool, clean scent of the northern forest, and the nights are dark enough for serious stargazing. From here, hikers can access trails leading toward the Presidential Range, including routes up Mount Washington via the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail and the Jewell Trail. The Mount Washington Cog Railway and the summit auto road are also within easy driving distance for those who prefer a less strenuous approach to the top. The Zealand Valley, with its falls and backcountry huts, offers gentler terrain for families and casual walkers. Sugarloaf 1 is open from mid-May through mid-October, with July and August being the busiest months. Weekends fill quickly during peak summer, so advance reservations are a smart move. Fall brings cooler temperatures and spectacular foliage, making September a favorite among returning visitors. The campground offers vault toilets and potable water but no electric hookups — a straightforward setup that keeps the focus where it belongs, on the mountains and the forest around you.
