Our Take
What makes BOLES FIELD CAMPGROUND special
Boles Field Campground is a quiet gem tucked into the northern reaches of the Sabine National Forest in deep East Texas, just a short distance from the Louisiana border. The landscape here feels like another world compared to the open plains most people associate with Texas. Tall loblolly pines, hardwood bottomlands, and winding creeks create a lush, Southern forest atmosphere that rewards slow exploration. The campground sits near the shores of Toledo Bend Reservoir, one of the largest man-made lakes in the South and a legendary bass fishing destination. Whether you fish from the bank, a kayak, or a motorboat, the chances of hooking largemouth bass, crappie, or catfish are excellent. Beyond the water, the Sabine National Forest offers miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding through rolling pine-forested hills. Boles Field provides a small number of well-spaced, shaded sites with vault toilets. The campground is rustic and uncrowded, appealing to those who value solitude over amenities. Sites are generally first-come, first-served, and availability is rarely an issue outside of holiday weekends. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, with mild temperatures and manageable humidity. Summers are hot and humid in true East Texas fashion, so plan water activities for the heat of the day and enjoy cool evenings by the campfire.
