Our Take

What makes CAMPTON CAMPGROUND special

Campton Campground is one of the larger facilities in the White Mountain National Forest, with 91 sites spread across a wooded landscape near the forest's southern edge in New Hampshire. Its size and location make it an excellent home base for exploring the wide range of attractions the region has to offer, from covered bridges and swimming holes to some of the finest hiking trails in the Northeast. The campground itself is shaded by a mix of pine and hardwood, with sites that accommodate everything from solo tent campers to families with larger RVs. The Pemigewasset River flows nearby, and its tributaries provide ample opportunities for fishing, wading, and cooling off on hot summer afternoons. The Kancamagus Highway, Franconia Notch State Park, and the Flume Gorge are all within easy reach, as are trailheads for popular peaks like Mount Osceola and Mount Tecumseh. The towns of Campton and Plymouth offer grocery stores, restaurants, and local shops for resupply runs and rainy-day diversions. Campton Campground is open from mid-May through mid-October. Given its size, availability is generally better here than at smaller White Mountain campgrounds, but summer weekends and the fall foliage season in late September still warrant advance reservations. The campground features flush toilets and a campground host, adding a touch of comfort to the experience while keeping the wooded, national-forest feel intact.
