Our Take
What makes Chinamen's Campground special
Chinamen's Campground occupies a scenic stretch of shoreline on Canyon Ferry Reservoir, about thirty miles east of Helena, Montana. With 38 sites tucked among the rolling hills, it strikes a nice balance between having neighbors and keeping your space. The area carries traces of Montana's gold rush era — prospectors once worked these drainages, and the surrounding landscape still feels rugged and storied. Fishing is the main draw, with walleye, perch, and rainbow trout all pulling anglers to the reservoir, while the open water invites kayaking and sailing when conditions cooperate. Sites accommodate smaller RVs, so leave the big fifth-wheel at home and bring something nimble instead. Year-round access means winter visitors can enjoy ice fishing when the reservoir freezes solid. Summer weekends fill up with Helena locals, so midweek visits reward you with quieter mornings. This spot works best for anglers, history buffs, and small-rig travelers looking for an uncrowded Montana lake experience.
