Our Take

What makes Dorr Skeels Campground special

Tucked into the rugged embrace of Montana's Kootenai National Forest, Dorr Skeels Campground is a quiet retreat for those who prefer their wilderness without the crowds. Situated 13 miles south of Troy along Highway 56, this intimate 10-site campground rests beneath towering conifers where the air carries the clean scent of pine and the sounds of nearby Keeler Creek. The setting is pure northwest Montana: steep timbered ridges, crystal-clear streams, and a stillness that settles over the forest at dusk. Anglers will appreciate the proximity to excellent trout fishing in the surrounding creeks and the Kootenai River, while hikers can explore a network of forest roads and trails that wind deeper into the backcountry. The Cabinet Mountains Wilderness lies within easy driving distance, offering more ambitious day-trip possibilities. Wildlife sightings are common here, from white-tailed deer browsing at the forest edge to the occasional black bear passing through. With just 10 sites, Dorr Skeels fills up on summer weekends, so arriving early on Friday is a smart move. The campground is typically open from late May through September, with July and August offering the warmest weather. Facilities are basic but well-maintained, making this an ideal base camp for anyone seeking a genuine backcountry experience without venturing too far from the highway.
