Our Take
What makes Codorniz Recreation Area Campground special
Codorniz Recreation Area Campground occupies a sun-drenched stretch of the Sierra Nevada foothills above Eastman Lake, near the small community of Raymond, California. This is foothill country at its most honest — golden grasslands rolling into blue oak woodlands, with the jagged Sierra crest rising in the distance like a promise of wilder things. The lake itself is a reservoir managed by the Army Corps of Engineers, and its quiet, less-trafficked shores make Codorniz feel like a well-kept secret. What truly sets this campground apart is the wildlife. The area is recognized as exceptional birding habitat, and patient visitors are regularly rewarded with sightings of golden eagles soaring on thermals above the hills. Bobcats, coyotes, and mule deer move through the landscape, especially during the cooler hours of dawn and dusk. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars and a field guide — the diversity here is remarkable. Spring is the prime season, when the hills are green, wildflowers carpet the meadows, and the lake level is at its most inviting for boating, fishing, and swimming. Fall and winter bring milder temperatures and excellent raptor viewing. Summer can be hot, so early mornings and evenings become the most active times. Codorniz is a wonderful fit for nature photographers, birders, and families who enjoy a quieter, wilder style of lakeside camping away from the usual crowds.
