Our Take

What makes COON CREEK GROUP CAMPGROUND special

Perched in the pine-covered mountains above Angelus Oaks in the San Bernardino National Forest, Coon Creek Group Campground rewards visitors with one of Southern California's most dramatic canyon views. The campground sits at a comfortable elevation that offers genuine relief from the lowland heat, and the air carries the sweet, resinous scent of Jeffrey and ponderosa pine. Historic stone cabins dot the surrounding area, lending a sense of heritage to a landscape that has drawn mountain visitors for well over a century. The setting is nothing short of stunning. Sites look out over a deep, wooded canyon that changes character with the light, glowing amber at sunrise and deepening to shadowy blue as evening settles in. The surrounding trails wind through mixed conifer forest and chaparral, connecting to a broader network that includes routes toward Big Bear Lake and the San Gorgonio Wilderness, home to Southern California's highest peak. Coon Creek is configured for group use, making it ideal for family gatherings, church retreats, and organized outings. Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly for summer weekends and fall color season when the black oaks turn gold. The best camping window runs from May through October, though mild days can extend into November. The small mountain community of Angelus Oaks is just a short drive for basic supplies, and the town of Redlands lies about thirty minutes downhill for full services.
