Our Take

What makes CRAGS CAMPGROUND special

Set at 7,000 feet in the rugged eastern Sierra Nevada about ten miles southwest of the charming ranching town of Bridgeport, Crags Campground delivers that classic high-desert-meets-mountain beauty California does so well. Towering granite formations rise above the sites, and the nearby Twin Lakes area provides a stunning backdrop of glacially carved valleys, aspen groves, and crystal-clear alpine water. Fishing is the main draw here. Twin Lakes and Robinson Creek are renowned for trophy-sized brown and rainbow trout, and the access could not be more convenient. Hikers will find trailheads leading into the Hoover Wilderness and toward Sawtooth Ridge, one of the most dramatic skylines in the Sierra. For a memorable day trip, the ghost town of Bodie State Historic Park is just a short drive to the north. The campground offers shaded sites nestled among Jeffrey pine and sagebrush, with vault toilets and drinking water available. There are no hookups. At this elevation, summer days are warm and dry while nights cool down considerably, making it comfortable sleeping weather from late May through mid-October. Weekends fill up fast during peak summer months, so booking through Recreation.gov well in advance is the smart move. Crags is an excellent pick for anyone who wants Sierra solitude without the crowds that descend on the western slope.
