Our Take

What makes Cripple Creek Campground special

Cripple Creek Campground sits along the legendary Dalton Highway, one of North America's most remote and storied overland routes. With 18 sites carved into the Alaskan bush outside Fairbanks, this is a campground built for travelers who measure their days in miles of gravel and moments of awe. The Dalton stretches north toward Prudhoe Bay through some of the most untouched wilderness on the continent, and Cripple Creek makes a natural base camp along the way. Sites are simple and unassuming, shaded by boreal spruce and surrounded by the kind of quiet that only exists hundreds of miles from the nearest stoplight. The campground draws a steady mix of overlanders, pipeline-history enthusiasts, and wildlife watchers hoping for caribou, bear, or moose. Long summer evenings here feel endless under the subarctic sky, and there is no better place to swap road stories with fellow travelers who have earned their dust. Anglers will find productive creeks within striking distance, and the terrain itself invites unhurried exploration on foot. Cripple Creek is not a luxury destination. It is something better: a genuine Alaskan waypoint where the journey itself is the reward.
