Tall pines and mixed conifers shade the sites, and the surrounding landscape is a patchwork of meadows, ridgelines, and steep canyons that feel wonderfully remote. Mendocino National Forest is a paradise for those who enjoy exploring on unpaved roads. The forest's network of back roads leads to hidden swimming holes, panoramic ridge-top viewpoints, and trailheads that see remarkably little foot traffic. Birdwatching is excellent in the area, and black-tailed deer, black bears, and wild turkeys are common sights. Snow Mountain Wilderness, accessible from nearby trailheads, offers more rugged hiking for those seeking a challenge. Because Dixie Glade operates on a first-come, first-served basis and sits well off the beaten path, finding an open site is rarely a problem, even on weekends. The campground is typically accessible from late spring through early fall, with June through October being the prime window. Summer days are warm and dry, while autumn brings cooler temperatures and a golden cast to the surrounding oaks. Come prepared with everything you need, as the nearest services in Stonyford are limited.
