Our Take
What makes DOUBLE LAKE RECREATION AREA special
Double Lake Recreation Area has been welcoming campers to the East Texas Piney Woods since 1937, when the Civilian Conservation Corps built the original facilities around a small forest lake in Sam Houston National Forest. The campground offers tent sites, RV pads, and group areas beneath towering loblolly pines and hardwoods that create a shaded canopy even on the hottest summer days. The lake is open for fishing year-round with small electric motors only, keeping the water calm for paddlers and anglers targeting bass and catfish. A 5-mile hiking trail connects to the Big Creek Scenic Area, and access to the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail — the longest continuously marked hiking path in Texas — is available from the recreation area. A 20-mile mountain bike trail loops around the lake for riders of varying skill levels. A swimming area provides relief during the humid East Texas summers. The CCC-era stone and timber structures give the area a historic feel that distinguishes it from newer campgrounds. Located near Coldspring, Double Lake is about 90 minutes north of Houston, making it a convenient escape from the metro area.
