Our Take
What makes EAST MEADOW CAMPGROUND special
East Meadow Campground lies alongside Jackson Meadow Reservoir in the Tahoe National Forest, offering a serene high-country camping experience near Sierraville, California. At approximately 6,100 feet of elevation in the northern Sierra Nevada, this campground sits in a lovely transitional zone where dense conifer forest opens into broad mountain meadows that burst with wildflowers in midsummer. The Forest Service campground provides a modest collection of well-spaced sites beneath towering pines and firs, each with a fire ring and picnic table. Facilities are basic, with vault toilets and no hookups, which keeps the atmosphere refreshingly quiet and uncommercial. The reservoir is a short distance away, and its clear mountain waters support excellent trout fishing as well as paddling and swimming. Anglers will find both rainbow and brown trout willing to cooperate, especially during the early morning and evening hours. The meadows near camp are wonderful for wildlife watching. Mule deer graze at dusk, raptors circle overhead, and the chorus of birds at dawn is a natural alarm clock worth setting no backup for. Hiking trails radiate into the national forest, with connections to the Pacific Crest Trail for those wanting a bigger adventure. The season runs from roughly late June through September, and most sites are first-come, first-served. Arrive early in the day, particularly on summer weekends. East Meadow is a gem for campers who appreciate open landscapes, quiet water, and the simple pleasures of mountain camping.
