Our Take
What makes ESHOM CAMPGROUND special
Eshom Campground sits at 4,800 feet in the heart of Giant Sequoia National Monument, managed by the Hume Lake Ranger District in the southern Sierra Nevada near Dunlap, California. The forest here is extraordinary — a mixed canopy of ponderosa pine, incense cedar, and the ancient giant sequoias that have drawn visitors to this corner of the Sierra for over a century. Walking among these massive trees, some of which were already old when Rome was young, lends every moment at camp a sense of quiet reverence. The campground itself is intimate and shaded, with sites spread beneath the tall canopy where the air carries the warm vanilla scent of sun-warmed ponderosa bark. Nearby trails wind through sequoia groves and along ridgelines with sweeping views of the Kings River canyon. Hume Lake, just a short drive away, offers swimming, fishing, and kayaking for those seeking water recreation. Late spring through early fall is the prime season, with June through October offering the most comfortable conditions. Summer weekends draw families to the area, but midweek visits and shoulder-season trips reward campers with near-solitude among the big trees. Eshom Campground is perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and families who want an immersive sequoia experience without the congestion of the more heavily visited national park campgrounds to the south.
