Our Take
What makes FINDLEY CAMPGROUND special
Findley Campground sits quietly alongside Jackson Meadow Reservoir in the Tahoe National Forest, surrounded by the kind of Sierra Nevada mountain scenery that draws people back to the same spot year after year. Located near Sierraville, California, at roughly 6,100 feet of elevation, this Forest Service campground trades convenience for character, and the trade is well worth it. The campground is small and rustic, with a handful of well-shaded sites beneath mature conifers. There are no electric or water hookups, and vault toilets serve the area, so this is camping in the traditional sense. What you get in return is solitude, star-filled skies, and mornings so quiet you can hear the trout rising on the reservoir. Jackson Meadow is a beautiful body of water ringed by forest, and its calm surface is perfect for fishing, kayaking, and lazy afternoons on a float tube. Hiking opportunities abound in the surrounding national forest, from easy lakeside strolls to more challenging treks that connect with the Pacific Crest Trail corridor. Wildlife sightings are common, with mule deer, osprey, and the occasional black bear making appearances. The season here is short, generally late June through September, and sites tend to fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Plan to arrive early on Friday if you are targeting a weekend trip. Findley is ideal for campers who value peace and natural beauty over amenities.
