Our Take
What makes Hodgdon Meadow Campground special
Hodgdon Meadow Campground offers a quieter, more relaxed entry into Yosemite National Park, situated near the Big Oak Flat entrance along Highway 120 on the park's western side. About 25 miles from Yosemite Valley, it trades the crowds and granite drama of the Valley floor for a peaceful forest setting at around 4,900 feet elevation, surrounded by mixed conifers and the gentle openings of its namesake meadow. The campground features 105 sites spread across several loops, giving it a more spacious feel than the tightly packed Valley campgrounds. Sites accommodate both tents and RVs, and the atmosphere here tends to attract campers who value peace and quiet over proximity to the biggest attractions. That said, a scenic 45-minute drive puts you right in the heart of Yosemite Valley, and the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias is only a few miles away — a wonderful, less-visited alternative to the more famous Mariposa Grove. Reservations are required from mid-April through mid-October and are available through Recreation.gov. While competition is less cutthroat than for Valley campgrounds, summer weekends still fill quickly. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis during the off-season, and mild autumn days can make for some of the most pleasant camping of the year. Hodgdon Meadow is a smart choice for late arrivals to the park, for families seeking a calmer pace, or for anyone who wants a Yosemite experience without the Valley hustle.
