Our Take

What makes HURRICANE CAMPGROUND special

Hurricane Campground lies along a clear mountain stream in the forested highlands of southwestern Virginia near Sugar Grove, where eastern hemlock trees and dense rhododendron thickets create a cool, shaded sanctuary even in the height of summer. The sound of rushing water is ever-present, and the deep green canopy overhead filters sunlight into soft, dappled patterns across the forest floor. This is Southern Appalachian camping at its most atmospheric — rich biodiversity, layered mountain ridges fading into blue haze, and a pace of life that invites you to slow down and breathe. Fishing in the stream is a favorite pastime, with native brook trout rewarding patient anglers, and the surrounding Jefferson National Forest offers miles of hiking trails, including access to portions of the Appalachian Trail corridor. Wildflower displays in spring are spectacular, summer brings lush greenery and firefly-lit evenings, and autumn transforms the hardwood forest into a blaze of gold, orange, and crimson. Hurricane Campground is ideal for anglers, hikers, leaf-peepers, and anyone drawn to the quiet beauty of the Appalachian highlands. Couples looking for a peaceful weekend escape and families wanting to introduce children to stream play and forest exploration will find this campground especially rewarding. It is one of those rare places where simplicity itself becomes the attraction.
