Our Take

What makes Iron Creek Campground special

Iron Creek Campground occupies a stately grove near the confluence of Iron Creek and the Cispus River in Washington's Gifford Pinchot National Forest, just a scenic drive from the town of Randle. What sets this campground apart is its magnificent stand of old-growth Douglas firs, some reaching well over a hundred feet tall, their massive trunks creating a cathedral-like atmosphere that feels both humbling and deeply restorative. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the volcanic landscapes of the southern Cascades. The Windy Ridge Viewpoint at Mount St. Helens is one of the most popular day trips, offering a dramatic look into the blast zone and crater. Trails through the surrounding forest range from easy nature loops to longer routes that climb into alpine terrain with views of Mount Adams and Mount Rainier on clear days. Iron Creek provides a good selection of sites for both tents and RVs, many of them well-spaced beneath the old-growth canopy for a genuine sense of privacy. The season runs roughly from late May through September, and summer weekends can fill up, so reservations are recommended during peak months. Early fall is a particularly fine time to visit, when the bigleaf maples turn gold against the dark green of the conifers. For campers who want to sleep beneath ancient trees and wake to birdsong and river sounds, Iron Creek is one of the finest options in the region.
