Our Take
What makes LOWER TWIN LAKES AT BRIDGEPORT special
Lower Twin Lakes Campground sits in the high desert and mountain transition zone near Bridgeport, California, a small ranching town on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. The Twin Lakes area, just 10 miles from town, is framed by rugged granite peaks and provides a striking landscape for camping, fishing, and hiking. Robinson Creek runs directly through the campground, offering good rainbow trout fishing right from your site. For those willing to hike, the Robinson Creek Trail leads into the Hoover Wilderness and connects to a network of backcountry lakes and peaks. The Bridgeport area is famous for its prolific trout fishing — the nearby Bridgeport Reservoir and East Walker River draw serious fly fishers from across the West. Horseback riding outfitters operate in the Twin Lakes area during summer. At elevation, nights are cool and dry, and the clear skies over the eastern Sierra are among the best for stargazing in California. The campground season is short — roughly late May through mid-October, dictated by snow — so plan accordingly. Bodie State Historic Park, one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the West, is a short drive north for a fascinating day trip.
