Our Take

What makes MARY SMITH CAMPGROUND special

There is a reason Sunset Magazine once named this area among the prettiest lake campgrounds in all of California. Mary Smith Campground, located near the small community of Lewiston in Shasta County, sits along the emerald-green waters of Lewiston Lake, a cold, clear reservoir fed by releases from Trinity Dam. The lake's stable water levels and consistent cold-water temperatures create exceptional year-round trout fishing, drawing fly anglers and bait fishermen alike to its productive shores. Tall pines and Douglas firs shade the campsites, and the air carries the scent of evergreen mixed with the cool mist that rises off the water on quiet mornings. Beyond fishing, visitors can kayak the lake's calm surface, hike forested trails that wind along the water's edge, or simply sit back and watch ospreys dive for their dinner. Spring and fall deliver the most comfortable weather and the most solitude, while summer brings warmer days and a festive atmosphere as families set up camp for extended vacations. Winter fishing remains excellent for those who do not mind bundling up. Mary Smith Campground calls to serious anglers, nature photographers captivated by mountain lake scenery, and anyone seeking a peaceful Northern California retreat where the water is cold, the forests are deep, and the pace of life slows to a gentle drift.
